Taking a Risk

We decided to quit our full-time corporate roles, and focus all our energy on making OHME! amazing. In other words, this forced us to leave behind a world of stability and comfort and venture into unknowns and uncertainty. Here's why we did it!

Making the Decision to Go Full Time

When making this decision, there was definitely a large amount of mixed emotions; a huge melting pot of both excitement, doubt, and all the emotions in between. There were days when I felt confident in my decisions, and others when I truly felt more lost.

Excitement: Han and I were very excited for the opportunity to leave our corporate roles, where we were working 9 AM - 5 PM, to put our full energy into this business full-time. It is a very different experience investing your time, effort, and resources into something you are truly passionate about. Compared to having to come home after a full day of work at our corporate job to then begin working in OHME!, this felt like such a relieving and refreshing pivot. Furthermore, we were able to see real traction and momentum in the business soon after in the business which further justified our decision and propelled us to work even harder.

Fear: The idea of not having the comfort and stability of a predictable amount of money being sent into the bank every period was definitely a hard one to accept. It was a scary realization that success, or failure, is not fully dependent on us and the effort that we put in. There was no safety net, no backup team, and no redos. This led to a realization that we need to elevate our efforts beyond the full amount we have already been putting in; we forced ourselves to grow faster, take on every challenge and opportunity, and perform our best in all avenues.

Taking the Leap: Considering the Realities

The biggest consideration we had was whether we could financially tolerate not having a stable source of income. Being a family living in Vancouver, Canada, which is the country’s most expensive city, we had to be realistic. This is in addition to our other financial commitments, such as our mortgage, childcare, and general living expenses.

Additionally, we reviewed the momentum OHME! Was carrying to ensure the business was progressing enough to justify more investment of our time and resources. Although working on this passion has always been the dream, we were careful to consider the feasibility of the decision as well.

Be Realistic when Going Full-Time

Leaving your job and focusing on passion is an amazing feeling, and it should feel that way. However, understand that the good and the bad are a package deal! Do not ignore the hardships that come with this decision. Is it essential to be pragmatic during this crucial moment

The biggest struggle is sustainability. This is a long-term decision, so both your financial and mental state must be prepared. Firstly, can you confidently live even without a consistent income source? Secondly, are you prepared for the stress that comes with the uncertainty? If both answers are yes, maybe this is the route for you!

Ultimately, I think these opportunities are not abundant in life, and if working on your business full-time is something you truly want to do, like I did, consider going for it!!
